Research

The NEC hub is conducting research in key thematic areas i.e health, education and social protection sectors on budget allocation and absorption visa vie service delivery. The hub also profiles CSOs that form part of the Hub for collaborative opportunities of joint research. This enhances the ownership and relevance of the Hub. The budget champions, Persons With Disabilities, and Media Hub are involved in the research to create synergy. The research has a platform for peer-to-peer learning.

Nec Hub conducted research in the following Counties: Nairobi, Murang’a, Machakos and Nyeri 

The following were specific objectives of the research for each county.

 

Machakos County research objectives
  1. To investigate how primary healthcare funding can address infrastructure needs (e.g. water).
  2. To assess the role of community advocacy in influencing budgetary allocations for public health facilities.
  3. To propose the construction of a borehole as a solution.

Nairobi County Research objectives
  1. To examine the financial disbursement, allocation, and expenditure of VTCs in Nairobi, 2. To clarify which VTCs are county-funded and analyze the challenges they face due to unclear or inconsistent funding structures.
  2. To compare the funding levels and operational capacity of VTCs and National TVET institutions.
  3. To assess the impact of underfunding on the quality of training, student enrollment, and the sustainability of VTCs.
  4. To provide recommendations for improving funding mechanisms and enhancing the competitiveness of VTCs.

Murang’a County research objectives
  1. To evaluate the current state of funding for vocational training centres.
  2. To determine the extent of infrastructure challenges (classrooms, toilets,etc.) in the selected institution.
  1. To analyze the role of community advocacy in influencing budgetaryallocations for infrastructure improvements.
  1. To propose strategies for improving infrastructure through community- driven advocacy.

Nyeri County research objectives
  1. To assess the current funding mechanisms for NCD drug procurement at the Level 3 facility.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of the Nyeri Health Service Fund 2021 in improving access to NCD medications for vulnerable populations.
  3. To explore the challenges faced by the facility in ensuring consistent drug availability for NCD patients.
  4. To determine the perceptions of NCD patients regarding service delivery at the facility, particularly in relation to drug availability. Detailed reports will be shared after review.
